Monaco is considering a move for Onana while Manchester United’s goalkeeping future is uncertain. According to Sky Sports, AS Monaco is strongly looking to sign Manchester United custodian André Onana. Since joining Manchester United for £47.3 million from Inter Milan in 2023, the 29-year-old Cameroonian international has had a disappointing time at the club.

Onana’s abilities seem to have declined dramatically over the last few games , with only one start in United’s final four Premier League games last season. Notably, he was responsible for eight errors that resulted in goals—the league’s second-highest total. Monaco, looking to strengthen their goalkeeping department, has begun preliminary discussions about a prospective transfer.

While no formal contact has been made, the Ligue 1 team is seriously considering acquiring Onana’s services. Despite his recent troubles, Onana is under contract with Manchester United until 2028. He has appeared 101 times in all competitions, contributing to the club’s FA Cup victory in his rookie season.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano clarified that Monaco’s interest in Onana is genuine, but only exploratory. Romano emphasises that Monaco has yet to communicate directly with Onana’s representation and regards him as one of several prospective goalkeeping targets.

If United decides to replace Onana, Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa and Marco Carnesecchi from Atalanta are allegedly the top candidates. United’s goalkeeping status is under intense examination, particularly after a poor 15th-place Premier League performance and a Europa League final defeat.

Edwin van der Sar, a former United custodian, recently defended Onana, arguing that recent poor performances are due to greater team shortcomings rather than individual custodian blunders. To summarise, while Monaco’s interest remains speculative, any official approach might result in major movement in Manchester United’s goalkeeping ranks this transfer season.
